Why in Duguwolowila? 

Gentilly, one of the cities participating in the youth meetings cooperates with the Malian town of Duguwolowila since 2002. A health center, micro installation for the supply of drinking water and vegetable gardens have been built. 

In 2007 the German city of Freiberg also participated in this project. They electrified a health center with photovoltaic panels.

In 2009 a youth group from Gentilly and Freiberg went to Mali in Duguwolowila. They restored the school and planted a vegetable garden for the pupils. 

Why acting in water domain?

Gentilly has been involved in a project of increasing drinking water supplies, hygiene and sanitation in the whole city of Duguwolowila for a couple of years.

The aim is to improve the living conditions particularly for girls and women. It is mainly their duty to provide fresh water for the families. Moreover, girls are often excluded from school, as a proper sanitation at schools is missing. 

Duguwolowila

About 48.000 people live in Duguwolowila in an area of 4.681 square kilometers.

Duguwolowila lays in the Koulikoro region and includes 31 villages an 16 hamlets. The principal village is called Touba and has 18.000 inhabitants.

Most people in Duguwolowila have their own family farms and run traditional extensive stock-farming.

Why setting up a water pump?

In contrast to the traditional water points and wells, the use of a water pump reduces the risks of water pollution. Fewer diseases are able to spread. Especially diarrheal diseases are a major challenge. Besides, the risk of people falling into the well is reduced. Women and children are more concerned by water supplying and will spend less time and energy to get water. This will surely enhance their daily life.

Setting up a water pump consists of several expensive steps.

• Boring: 7.500 - 8.500 €
• Purchase and setting up of a pump: 1.500 - 2.000 €
• Water analysis: 80 - 100 €
• Superstructure achievement (drainage channel, wall, sump): 1200 - 1500 €
